This article discusses the methods of the elites from Chile and Peru to strengthen a national identity based on the memory of heroic soldiers of the Pacific War. In this sense, it describes the role of traditions like the parade of students in military bands, the discourses to legitimize the power and role of intellectuals in the dissemination of propaganda
